River tour for Youths: Group explores tropical rain-fores

Conserving the environment is pivotal, says Unity Nabukelevu Youth Group president Avenai Serutabua.
Mr Serutabua and his youth club members toured the Upper Navua River to identify and at the same time learn how they could help save he environment.

He said the trip was informative and helped them as they learnt and witnessed the resourceful lush of the tropical rain forest cover.

Mr Serutabua said it was also important to ensure that youths sucessfully achieved Susatinable Development Goals number 14 and 15.
"Throughout the day trip we learnt Fiji became a signatory to the Ramsar Convention on wetland in the year 2006 and nominated the Upper Navua Conservation Area (UNCA) as Fiji's Wetland of International Importance a requirement for party members to the convenvtion," he said.

He said throughout the management of ecotourism company River Fiji Ltd, which operated white water rafting activities at the UNCA, Villagers of Nabukelevu, Wainadiro, and Waibogi had been provided employment opportunities as rafting guides, porters and drivers.

Mr Serutabua also said they were concerned about gravel extraction in the Navua River.
